Info | Tina Keeper was first elected as the Member of Parliament for the northern Manitoba riding of Churchill in the January 2006 election.
Prior to political life, Ms. Keeper spent a number of years staring in the CBC television series, North of 60. Born in Norway House, Manitoba, Ms. Keeper is a member of the Norway House Cree Nation. Her activism, however, is not unique to her life. Ms. Keeper’s parents were also renowned community activists: Order of Canada inductee Joseph Irvine Keeper and Anglican priest Phyllis Keeper.
Tina spent her early years in Chemawawin Cree Nation where her father worked with the community on the issue of hydro development.
Her life and work has been committed to her home and the Aboriginal community in Manitoba, where she has lived all of her life. Ms. Keeper's work has been focused on supporting and producing initiatives and projects in public education to participate in building bridges and the well-being of the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in the province of Manitoba.
In the past few years, Ms. Keeper has been active in the development of a visioning committee in Manitoba towards a Suicide Prevention Program. Besides being a Gemini award winner, she is also a member of the Order of Manitoba and a recipient of an Aboriginal Achievement Award.
Ms. Keeper is presently the Public Health Critic and an full-time member of the Standing Committees on Health and also Canadian Heritage. However, she is also quite active on the Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development committee as well.
