Info | Eugene, 48, is a Toronto native. He attended Rosedale Public School and De La Salle College “Oaklands.” After just two years of undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, Eugene was accepted into the university’s law school. After graduating with his LLB at the age of 24, he articled with the Crown Attorney’s Office in Toronto. Eugene then joined the office as an Assistant Crown Attorney upon being called to the bar in 1983.
Eugene has prosecuted every imaginable crime at every level of court including countless jury trials and ten murder prosecutions. He has been designated a domestic abuse specialist, a child abuse specialist, and is an Agent for the Attorney General for the purpose of obtaining authorizations for wiretaps. Eugene’s extensive committee work with bench and bar led to the establishment of a dedicated mental health court in Toronto, as well as putting in place alternative justice and case management practices.
His work with the Task Group on Restraining Orders led to the enactment of the Domestic Violence Protection Act. Recently he has been helping develop an electronic case management system for the Ministry of the Attorney General. Eugene has made presentations to police, prosecutors, and heads of prosecutions on many diverse subjects including gang violence, racially motivated crime, and police best practice standards.
Eugene and his wife Jackie, whom he married in 1979, have seven children. Always quietly active in his community, Eugene has served on the boards of directors and in other capacities for Hawthorn School for Girls and Mary Mother of God School. He is also the past Chair of the Loretto Abbey Catholic School Advisory Council. Eugene has been a conservative activist since campaigning for Ontario Progressive Conservatives in the 1970s. When not campaigning, working, raising his children or working for his community Eugene enjoys reading or, his favourite recreation, canoeing.
