Info | As Secretary of State, Sandy headed the Department of State, the oldest and most diverse agency in New York State government. During Secretary Treadwell's tenure, the Department's 17 divisions were reorganized into two main areas, the Division of Local Government and Community Services, and the Division of Business and Licensing Services.
Sandy Treadwell has served as Chairman of the New York Republican State Committee since March 8, 2001. Prior to his appointment as Chairman, Sandy served as New York State Secretary of State under Governor Pataki for more than six years after being unanimously confirmed by the New York State Senate.
Sandy also represented Governor Pataki in a number of other capacities, including serving as his representative to the Appalachian Regional Commission, a federal/state agency devoted to the development of economically disadvantaged areas. The Governor also designated Sandy to chair the Governor's Task Force on Campus Fire Safety and to be vice-chair of the Quality Communities Task Force.
As Secretary of State, Sandy also served on a variety of state boards and commissions and chaired the State Cemetery Board, the State Emergency Services Revolving Loan Board, the State Real Estate Board and the State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council.
Sandy was born in London, England and grew up in New York State. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor's degree in journalism. A former reporter for Sports Illustrated, he is the author of The World of Marathons, a book describing 26 epic running races on six continents.
Sandy held the position of chairman of the Essex County Republican Committee for nearly a decade. He was appointed a vice-chairman of the New York Republican State Committee in 1989 and was a leader in the grassroots effort of rebuilding the New York State Republican Party, which ultimately resulted in the election of Governor Pataki.
Sandy and his wife Libby were married in 1970. They reside in the Adirondacks and have two grown children, Carrie and Zach.
