InfoDINGLEY, Nelson, Jr., a Representative from Maine; born in Durham, Androscoggin County, Maine, February 15, 1832; attended the common schools at Unity, Maine, Waterville Seminary, and Waterville College; was graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., in 1855; studied law and was admitted to the bar, but left the profession and became proprietor and editor of the Lewiston (Maine) Journal in 1856; member of the State house of representatives 1862-1865, 1868, and again in 1873, and served as speaker in 1863 and 1864; Governor of Maine in 1874; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1876 and 1880; elected as a Republican to the Forty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William P. Frye; reelected to the Forty-eighth and to the seven succeeding Congresses and served from September 12, 1881, until his death in Washington, D.C., January 13, 1899, before the close of the Fifty-fifth Congress; chairman, Committee on Ways and Means (Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth Congresses); had also been reelected to the Fifty-sixth Congress; interment in Oak Hill Cemetery, near Auburn, Maine.
