| Info | SLOCUM, Henry Warner, a Representative from New York; born in Delphi, Onondaga County, N.Y., September 24, 1827; was graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and commissioned as a second lieutenant, First Artillery, July 1, 1852; served in the Seminole War and was promoted to first lieutenant March 3, 1855; resigned his commission October 31, 1856; settled in Syracuse, N.Y.; studied law while in the Army; was admitted to the bar in 1858 and practiced in Syracuse, N.Y.; member of the State assembly in 1859; entered the Union Army as colonel of the Twenty-eighth New York Volunteers in May 1861; promoted to major general and resigned his commission September 28, 1865, and settled in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he continued the practice of law; unsuccessful Democratic candidate for secretary of state of New York; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-first and Forty-second Congresses (March 4, 1869-March 3, 1873); was not a candidate for renomination in 1872; resumed the practice of law; was appointed president of the department of city works in 1876; elected as a Representative at Large from New York to the Forty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1883-March 3, 1885); died in Brooklyn, N.Y., April 14, 1894; interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
