Allred, a colorful Alamance County politician, had served both as a county commissioner and in the legislature in a career that dated back to the 1970s. He was known for his straight-forwardness and willingness to upset individuals, even in his own party, with his positions.
Allred resigned from the General Assembly in 2009 during an internal investigation after he was stopped by the N.C. Highway Patrol and charged with speeding on the way to legislative session. Legislators also reported smelling alcohol on his breath and obnoxious behavior when he arrived that day.
In 2010, he was charged with DWI and demanded a trial. Following a two-day hearing, he was convicted and was given a suspended 60-day sentence and placed on probation for 18 months.
