| Info | Born and raised in The Bronx, Dee Barbato has called the City of Yonkers her home for the past 37 years and in 1999 was elected to the Yonkers City Council where she continues to serve as representative of the Sixth District, the largest geographic district of the City Council that stretches to the Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Greenburgh and Scarsdale borders.
Ever outspoken, and at the forefront of tackling tough issues of importance to her constituency –most notably representing community interests regarding land use and development and advocacy for open government-- Dee has served as Majority Whip on the City Council as well as chairman of the Budget, Inter-Governmental Relations, and Municipal Operations committee. She is also a member of the Council’s Education and Community Relations committees and Rules.
As a young wife and mother, Dee got involved in her community by serving as an active member of the Sprain Lake Knolls Civic Association and as corresponding secretary of the First Precinct Community Council. Realizing the importance of parental involvement in her children’s education, she served as PTA president of School 32 and as first-vice president of the Yonkers Council of PTAs.
With her youngest in school full time, she continued her own education, graduating summa cum laude from Mercy College with a bachelor’s degree in English and Journalism & Media. Graduation saw her doing a stint with Gannett newspapers as a reporter and, a short time after and back to her roots, Dee served as Public Relations Director for the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
In 1989 she was hired by then-Yonkers City Manager Neil DeLuca as the first woman to hold the position of Public Information Officer for the City of Yonkers, instituting the city’s municipal access cable-TV station, CH-TV. She became active in the Yonkers Republican Party, elected as a District Leader in the 10th Ward and volunteering to work on numerous local campaigns. Her career in government continued, where she served as Program Administrator for Community Education for Westchester County Clerk Leonard Spano and as deputy director for the Office of Citizen Services and Public Information for former Westchester County Executive Andrew O’Rourke. Dee served as Westchester/Rockland Regional Director for New York State Assembly Minority Leader John Faso and, currently, is employed as a staff writer for the New York Power Authority in its Public Affairs Division.
Over the years Dee has served on the board of Yonkers Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Lincoln High School Academy of Finance, Enrico Fermi Scholarship Breakfast Committee, as chairman of the Yonkers Columbus Day Celebration Committee, and founding member of the Yonkers Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Committee and the Philipse Manor Hall Coalition.
For her efforts Dee has been the recipient of the Yonkers Council of PTAs’ Jenkins Memorial Award, a Women of Excellence/Business Professional Award from the Yonkers Chamber of Commerce, and a Quill Award for Alumni Achievement from Mercy College.
Dee credits her husband and family for all her accomplishments because of their loving encouragement and support.
