Info | Roger H. Corbin is in his fifth term as a Nassau County Legislator and serves as the Deputy Presiding Officer of the Majority. He represents the 2nd Legislative District, which includes the communities of East Garden City, East Meadow, Hempstead, Hicksville, Lakeview, New Cassel, Old Westbury, Rockville Centre, West Hempstead, and Westbury. Growing up in Westbury, Corbin was raised on a simple principle on which he has modeled his life and career: “Get involved and stay involved.”
Corbin’s involvement in public service began even before the Legislature was created when he served as a member of the original Charter Revision Committee, the body that set the ground rules for the Nassau County Legislature, a new, historic form of government. The formation of the legislature changed the system of government in Nassau County for the first time in 100 years, increasing representation and mandating two minority districts. He again made history in 1995 when he ran for office and became the first black Democrat to be elected to the newly formed Legislature. Since his election to public office, Corbin has given a voice to the concerns of minorities in Nassau County.
A former All-County Track and Field competitor in the 100 and 200 meters after graduating from Westbury High School in 1964, Corbin received a full track and field scholarship to Yankton University in South Dakota. In 1966 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the height of the Vietnam War and was stationed at Travis Air Force base in California. After his service, he attended Pace University, majoring in business law.
During 2000, Mr. Corbin also welcomed Senator Hillary Clinton, then first lady and senate candidate, to Magnolia Gardens in New Cassel. According to Corbin, the visit was a milestone for the minority community, as well as the other communities in the 2nd Legislative District.
Corbin recently retired from the New York City Off –Track Betting Corporation as branch manager after a career that extended for three decades. He currently serves as a community liasion for the North Shore Hospital Health System.
Corbin serves as chair of the Government Services and Operations Committee, vice chair of the Finance Committee and as a member of the Minority Affairs Committee.
He is married to his wife, Regina and they have three sons; Jason, Jarrett and Joshua, and one daughter, Jeannine.
