Info | Abdul-H Amin is a 54 year old native son of Arkansas. He is employed as a Certified Respiratory Care Practitioner with the University of Texas of Medical Branch. He is also owner of Gulf Coast Financial Services, an independent “Fee-Only” personal financial planning advisory service.
Amin is a decorated Vietnam combat Medic. After being honorably discharged from military service Amin relocated from Arkansas to Chicago, where he graduated from Governor’s State University majoring in Health Services Administration with emphasis in Health Care Planning. He is also a graduate of the University of Houston Certified Financial Planning Program, Registered with the International Board of Standards and Practices for Certified Financial Planners.
He is married to Dana Bjarnason-Amin of Vancouver, B.C. and has two grown children. Abdul and Dana decided to make Galveston their home by purchasing and restoring a 1904 historic home in the Silk Stocking Historic District in 1986.
When asked about his vision for Galveston. Amin says he envisions a Galveston that is economically sound with an orderly sense of purpose, managed by forward thinking. “I foresee a Galveston that offers a high quality of life, making those who live here at the end of the day proud, and serve as a motivation for those who leave to stay."
However, he says that “The current level of skepticism and cynicism that exists among residents toward city government and its leadership has made it very difficult to rally public support for initiatives that need to be undertaken in order to meet the inherent challenges of turning a vision into reality. We need a change in our leadership and management culture. It is time to challenge the current practice of ‘good-old-boy politics’ and the political bickering and infighting that plagues our city politics if we want the benefit of public trust and confidence” – a challenge that Amin says he is willing to accept.
According to Amin, his Mayoral campaign is about restoring public trust and confidence in our city governance and providing selfless leadership. Amin believes that his long list of civic engagement and volunteerism can serve as a platform for building partnerships, improving communication, encouraging teamwork and cooperation, and ensuring that citizens have an active role in the governance and progress of this city. Amin adds that he is not about to “sell Galveston’s soul.” “My campaign is about being proactive – it is about doing what we need to do today so that we can all enjoy a better tomorrow. It is about improving the quality of life for all Galvestonians."
Amin says that his primary motivation for running is a passion for “Good Governance” and a concern about the need to restore public trust and confidence in our city government and the need for focused and selfless leadership. He has been an advocate of community building and an enthusiastic proponent of “grassroots” citizen participatory government since becoming a resident of Galveston in 1983. Amin has been actively involved in civic affairs including:
