Info | JONES, George Washington, a Representative from Texas; born in Marion County, Ala., September 5, 1828; moved with his parents to Tipton County, Tenn., and shortly afterward to Bastrop, Tex., in 1848; attended the common schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1851 and commenced practice in Bastrop, Tex.; elected district attorney in 1856; during the Civil War enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private; commissioned lieutenant colonel and afterward promoted to the colonelcy of the Seventeenth Texas Infantry; returned to Bastrop County; member of the State constitutional convention in 1866; elected Lieutenant Governor of Texas in 1866; removed by General Sheridan as “an impediment to reconstruction” in 1867; elected as a National to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses (March 4, 1879-March 3, 1883); was not a candidate for reelection in 1882 to the Forty-eighth Congress; resumed the practice of his profession in Bastrop, Tex., and died there July 11, 1903; interment in Fairview Cemetery.
