InfoCouncilor Roderick V. Royal, MPA, began his political career as a teenager in 1979 during a campaign to elect Birmingham's first African-American mayor. Afterwards, the young "would-be-public-servant" set out on his own dream to become an elected official.

He fulfilled his dream when he was first elected to the Birmingham City Council in 2001. His constituents sent him back to City Hall in 2005 to represent District 9 for four more years. Councilor Royal chairs the Education Committee and serves on the Transportation and Communications Committee and the Planning and Zoning Committee.

His first try at politics occurred when he was elected by his peers to serve as student council president at Tuggle Elementary School. Later, Royal would be elected as student government president at both A.H. Parker High School and historic Tuskegee University. Councilor Royal participated as a youth member of the Fountain Heights Neighborhood Association and during the inception of the City's Citizen Participation (CP) Plan. Later, he served as a two-term secretary for the East Thomas Neighborhood Association. Councilor Royal is the first person in Birmingham history to advance to the position of City Councilor after serving as a Council Assistant.

Councilor Royal holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science, a Master of Arts Degree in Public Administration (Webster University, Saint Louis, Missouri) and is a graduate of the University of Alabama Police Academy. Councilor Royal also holds a Master of Arts degree in Religious Education (Birmingham Theological Seminary).

Councilor Royal is married with three children and resides in the Pratt City Community with his family and dog, a Springer Spaniel named Tara.
