DescriptionAn outrageous, propriety-snubbing literary event, Duluth managed to seduce the New York Times ("a knockout"), Los Angeles Times ("wonderfully nasty"), and People ("raunchy, dirty, outrageous ... very funny"). Spoofing just about everything imaginable, Gore Vidal's wild burlesque is not about the real Duluth, but a bizarre sort of Everytown, U.S.A., with swamps, deserts, and both palm trees and snow. When two women perish in a snow drift, one is reborn in the popular television series Duluth, and the other finds hereself in the "Hyatt Regency" romance novel Rogue Duke. Meanwhile, police lieutenant (and strip-search enthusiast) Darlene Ecks terrorizes a barrio full of illegal Mexicans and zealously pursues black Big John (drug dealer, master criminal, and her sometime lover). Duluth's mayor plumbs the mysteries of a swamped (literally) space ship, and a battle is waged between two competing Betty Grable biographers. Ingenious and outlandish, filled with baroque fictional whirligigs, Duluth is an execution of razor-sharp humor and Vidal's most open assault on the excesses of American life and culture.
