InfoLarry D. Thompson is a Senior Fellow with the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. In January 2004, he will be a Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Georgia Law School. Mr. Thompson was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Deputy Attorney General on May 10, 2001. In addition to Mr. Thompson’s duties in supervising the overall operations of the Department of Justice, on July 9, 2002, President Bush appointed him to lead the President’s Corporate Fraud Task Force, an interagency group that coordinates the efforts of federal agencies to combat significant financial crimes. In March 2002, Attorney General John Ashcroft named Mr. Thompson to lead the National Security Coordination Council which works to ensure seamless coordination of all functions of the Department relating to national security, particularly its efforts to combat terrorism.

Previously, Mr. Thompson was a partner in the Atlanta, Georgia law firm of King & Spalding. He joined King & Spalding in 1977 and practiced in the Antitrust and Litigation Departments until 1982. From 1982-1986, Mr. Thompson served as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. As U.S. Attorney, he directed the Southeastern Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force and served on the Attorney General’s Economic Crime Council. After Returning to King & Spalding in 1986 as a partner, he resumed his practice in civil and criminal litigation.

Mr. Thompson graduated cum laude in 1967 with a bachelors degree in sociology from Culver-Stockton College where he served as a member of the Board of Trustees. He received his masters degree in sociology in 1969 from Michigan State University and his law degree in 1974 form the University of Michigan.
