The Fixer: Why is Peltola on here. She won against a nut job.

She was the biggest D over performer of Biden in any congressional race. Seems pretty impressive to me!

Is there any reason this shouldn't be Volodymyr Zelenskyy? Winning a tough election is one thing, but rallying a country and the world to beat back Russia is another level of outstanding altogether.

The 'fun' thing about blaming the DCCC for an R incumbent losing (an R incumbent who didn't get NRCC help in his primary) is that when that incumbent shows that he really wasn't much of an ally, the DCCC will be blamed for that too.

In 1968, Galifianakis received a special visit on the House floor from the newly elected president, Richard Nixon ’37, who wanted to meet his fellow Duke Law graduate. Multiple invitations for dinner at the White House followed, as were rides home on Air Force One whenever the president was headed to North Carolina. (Galifianakis was surprised and dismayed when Helms’ 1972 campaign posters carried an admonition from President Nixon that “I need Jesse Helms in Washington.”)

Glad to see he was unharmed. No matter the political affiliation, violence does not have a place in politics.

Flores won a marginal Dem seat in an R wave year and is highly disfavored in the general. Not OPOTY material.

That was weird. I logged in to MapBox and it said my account was deactivated. Put in the same credit card info as before and it's all fine. Just had a successful payment on July 1. Got no notices of anything. Very strange.

All the map services give you a certain number of requests for free, so I'm using Google Maps on the Edit pages to slightly reduce my cost through MapBox since there isn't enough traffic on those pages to reach the GM threshold.

While he was extremely right wing (even in the context of the LDP) and some of his policies were horrific, political violence is wrong in all its forms, especially assassinating a politician just because you disagree with them.

It reminds me of when I saw some youtube footage of the assassination of Inejiro Asanuma, there were several Japanese (and otherwise) commenters saying how good it was that Asanuma was killed because he was a socialist and how heroic the assassin was. That is a deeply disturbing attitude and one which is quite frankly terrible. No one deserves to die like this. Not Abe, not anyone.

RIP.

Okay I pulled together an overview of Gramm's 1996 campaign since today is his 80th birthday. My last campaign overview was for LaFollette, so it was time to do something for a conservative candidate anyway. I think I will do a third party campaign next.

Interesting that the district lines have a tiny notch in them to pick up Allegiant Stadium.

What is with the people who are advocating for giving Russia a big chunk of Ukraine? I'm no historian, but it seems like one of the more obvious lessons of history is that appeasement doesn't work.

Just finished this book: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian [Link] It is autobiographical of author Sherman Alexie's early life.

Its been added to a lot of high school reading lists recently since on the forefront is the topic of renaming monuments, streets, high school mascots, etc which have derogatory native names. [Link]

In my area, its caused a bit of a controversy because it contains some adult language and topics. Some people don't think its appropriate for their high school aged children. I think its on a lot reading lists because it does a very good job articulating the experience of being a native growing up and living on "the rez." Contrast this with the stereotypes of native Americans that are churned out by Hollywood and consumed by most high schoolers, this book provides an very honest and humorous take on native life. It is also quite touching and uncomfortable to read at times.

Its not a long book, but a very good book that covers brilliantly the coming age story of a young man and how he has overcome many challenges to triumph in life. This is truly worth the read and might even be a bit of therapy for anyone that struggled with "belonging" at any point in their life - it certainly provided some therapy for me.

Dylan, I'm sorry that you are grappling with this hardship and I'll pray for comfort for you.

I'll share that over the summer a friend of mine and someone else a little more distant in my circle died as well - both of suicide, unrelated but within 7 days of each other.

Kind of rough, particularly my friend because it really just seemed so out of character. I've sinced learned he had a hidden addiction he grappled with very privately and was the reason for his suicide. It hit me very hard. Both did. The grief of helplessness, of sadness, of hopelessness. It can be really overwhelming.

Anyway, I found that sometimes the best way to overcome grief is to immerse oneself into being selfless by helping others. I'd encourage you to volunteer or just start helping someone in your circle that needs help. Its gets our focus/thoughts off ourselves and onto the needs of others.

And there is an unexpected benefit - you are helping to make the world a better place.

Create your own hope out of this, create some positive change to counter balance the hurt.

Peace brother.

You're a great member of the OC community and I'm sorry you are going through this. Take time for yourself, Dylan, and know that it's okay to grieve. After all, grief is love with no place to go.

Never understood resigning from a cushy job at the Times to run in a primary you weren't even guaranteed to make the ballot for.
