Description |
The American Party National Convention was held in Columbus OH. There were 27 delegates present. Gilbert O. Nations was nominated on the first ballot for President as shown below. Charles H. Randall was nominated for VP on the first ballot by a margin of 16 to 10 for William D. Upshaw GA. Randall declined to run, and later in the year the national committee selected Leander L. Pickett KY to serve as the VP nominee.
The American Party of 1924 sought the votes of Ku Klux Klan members from the time of their convention. Pickett, a former member of the Prohibition Party in Kentucky, denounced the leaders of the Democratic Party, Republican VP candidate Charles G. Dawes, and Robert M. LaFollette for denouncing the Klan (NYT 8/25/1924). Pickett stated that the opponents of the Klan needed to study its principles before attacking it.
