Description |
To select their mayoral candidate, the Labour Party voted through an electoral college process where party members and union officials as well as party MPs, MEPs, and GLA council candidates could choose the party nominee. The electoral college was weighted more strongly towards the MP/MEP/GLA candidate section and as such ended with the nomination of Frank Dobson MP despite that the party faithful and unions preferred Ken Livingstone MP.
Vote breakdown:
Union members - 72% for Livingstone
Party members - 60% for Livingstone
MP/MEP/GLA - 86.5% for Dobson
A majority was required in order to win, and after Jackson's votes were distributed Dobson won 51.53% to 48.47% for Livingstone.
