| Description |
The 22d Prohibition Party National Convention was held at Camp Mack in Milford IN. There were 154 delegates from 16 states and DC, allotted 107 votes. One third of the delegates came from IN.
Some party leaders, including the national chairman, recruited delegates pledged to Sen. William Langer, who had opposed much of Pres. Eisenhower's domestic policies. Langer attended the convention and gave one of the early speeches. Many party leaders worried that the Langer delegates were not dedicated to the party, and they won a vote to require all delegates to pledge to support the national ticket before the presidential balloting began. The national chairman and the Langer delegates bolted and nominated him under the banner of the "Pioneer Party."
The convention then nominated Enoch A. Holtwick IL for President and Herbert C. Holdridge CA for VP. Holdridge later withdrew, and the national committee selected Edward M. Cooper CA to replace him on the ballot.
