Description |
The 3d Republican Party National Convention (technically the National Union Party National Convention) assembled in the Front Street Theatre in Baltimore. It re-nominated President Lincoln on the first ballot as shown here (Lincoln 494, Grant 22, Not Voting 3). VP Hamlin was defeated for re-nomination by Andrew Johnson.
Delegates appeared at the convention from six States which had seceded. The Credentials Committee considered the southern delegates and recommended that they be allowed to sit in the convention but not vote. After a heated debate, the convention voted to allow full privileges to all delegates except for Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida.
This was the last Republican National Convention in which the roll call was conducted in the original pattern, beginning in New England and proceeding down the Atlantic seaboard and then zigzagging through the remaining states towards California.
Temporary Chairman: Robert J. Breckinridge (KY)
Permanent Chairman: William Dennison (OH)
