Description |
BBC Profile:
Labour largely prevailed in Uxbridge in the immediate period after the Second World War but the Conservatives held sway after 1970. Current Tory MP John Randall was first elected in a 1997 by-election after the death of his predecessor. He retained the seat in 2001 and 2005, increasing his majority at the last election to 6,171.
This newly-formed constituency includes the wards of Brunel, Cavendish, Hillingdon East, Hillingdon Manor, South Ruislip, Uxbridge North, Uxbridge South and Yiewsley, from the old seats of Uxbridge, and Ruislip Northwood. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
On the western edge of Greater London just north of Heathrow, Uxbridge is a relatively affluent, residential constituency with patches of industrial activity.
The constituency is home to the Uxbridge campus of Brunel University, which not only is a large local employer, but whose students contribute to the local economy.
Nearby Heathrow is also a major local employer, and plans for expansion of the airport can only increase job opportunities in the area, where most employment is predominantly clerical.
After boundary changes RAF Northolt - home to the Royal Squadron which is responsible for VIP transport of the royal family, senior government ministers and senior military officers - is now situated in the constituency.
