Description |
BBC Profile:
The seat of Kensington and Chelsea has been one of the Conservatives safest since its creation in 1997, with Alan Clarke, Michael Portillo and now Malcolm Rifkind elected with significant majorities.
Hammersmith and Fulham was held by the Tories between 1987 and 1997, until Labour won with a 12% swing. The seat became Conservative again in 2005 when Greg Hands took victory.
Boundary changes mean the new seat of Chelsea and Fulham is made up of six wards from the old Hammersmith and Fulham seat, and five wards from the old Kensington and Chelsea seat.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Much of Chelsea is now viewed as a global ultra-prime residential area. It is popular with wealthy expatriates and therefore, the constituency has a relatively large number of residents born outside the UK. For housing, the most desirable part of Chelsea is around Sloane Square, the Kings Road and Knightsbridge tube.
Fulham was a working-class area for the first half of the 20th century, but has since been subject to extensive restoration and gentrification.
The seat benefits from the new Imperial Wharf railway station which opened in 2009, on the London Overground network. The 7 million project, towards the south of constituency, has taken place alongside redevelopment of a former industrial site into 1,800 luxury apartments.
