Description |
This state convention of the Anti Masonic Party of Pennsylvania was held at Harrisburg. It nominated a slate of Presidential Electors and chose delegates to an Anti-Masonic national convention for 1836. The convention then voted to instruct the delegates. William H. Harrison won the ballot for President as shown here, and Francis Granger was recommended for VP by a vote of 102 to seven for Gov. Palmer of Vermont, five for W.F. Slade, and five for Hugh L. White [Charlestown VA (today WV), Virginia Free Press, 12/31/1835].
A major debate during the convention related to calling for the state legislature to pass a law to outlaw masonry. Nine delegates who led the movement for legislation came to be called the "Immortal Nine" and led by Thaddeus Stevens [The Scioto Gazette (Chillicothe, OH), 2/3/1836].
