Description |
The first Vegetarian Party National Convention was held in the Hotel Commodore in New York City during the sessions of the American Naturopathic Association.
The platform called for a diet free of animal, fish, and fowl.
Symon Gould placed Maxwell in nomination, saying that he could garner as many as five million votes. He estimated that two million votes would come from prohibitionists, anti-vivisectionists, and anti-tobacco groups.
In his acceptance speech, Maxwell pointed out that the largest animals were mostly vegetarian, including elephants and gorillas.
Gould, the associate editor of a vegetarian magazine, was nominated for Vice President.
