American Governors and Gubernatorial Elections, 1775-1978 Glashan |
Description |
The election of West Virginia governor in 1888 was contested, as were many other races in the state. Goff led in the initial canvass by just over 100 votes. The Democrats were able to organize both houses of the legislature, and they decided to allow the former governor to continue in office until the election was decided. The legislature sought to exclude several counties, primarily Kanawha, where Goff led. Eventually, the legislature declared against Goff, who appealled unsuccessfully to the state supreme court.
