Description |
In the state elections of 1867, the Union Republican Party in California divided, providing three candidates for Governor.
Former Union Democrats in the Republican Party, informally called the "short hairs," held a convention and nominated George C. Gorham for Governor. Gorham was a well-known railroad lobbyist.
The "long hairs," or the pre-war Republicans, nominated Caleb T. Fay for Governor. This group of Republicans believed that electing Gorham would doom the state Republican Party in upcoming elections. The two factions had very similar platforms, both supporting Radical Reconstruction.
The Democratic convention nominated Henry H. Haight, a San Francisco attorney.
Near the end of the campaign, as it became clear that the race would be between Haight and Gorham, most of the old Republicans decided to cross over and vote for Haight.
