Description | Pro-China party split from the dominant Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands (DPFI) eight days after the death in office of Tonga's 16th prime minister ʻAkilisi Pōhiva (December 30, 2014 to September 12, 2019). Sensing opportunity, DPFI member and Minister of Finance Pōhiva Tu'i'onetoa, at the urging of benefactors in China, swiftly launched a new party that would compete for seats in the Tonga parliament (Fale Alea) and have a chance at the prime-ministership. The party was at first known as the Movement for a People's Party, then renamed the Tonga People's Party with its symbol styled to look like those of China-allied labor parties throughout Asia. Pohiva Tuʻiʻonetoa became prime minister on October 8, 2019. The TPPI holds five seats in the Fale Alea [Paati ʻa e Kakai ʻo Tonga (TPPI)] |
