Description | Once dominant Socialist party with authoritarian tendencies led and launched by former President Abdoulaye Wade who ruled the country from 2000 until 2012. Wade was ousted by current President Mack Sall's Alliance for the Republic (APR).
Party was formed with the blessing of founding father President Léopold Sédar Senghor in 1974, and at first professed to be Marxist-Leninist.
Wade has since 2012 tried for a comeback, jumping through numerous, often uncomfortable alliances. His most recent, put together in mid-2017 ahead of parliamentary elections, is the Coalition Gagnante/Wattu Senegal ('Winning Coalition') of which his PDS is primus inter pares. [Parti Démocratique Sénégalais (PDS)]. |
