Description | The Anti-Nebraska Party was one of several political groups formed in opposition to the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which repealed the ban on slavery in the newly created Kansas and Nebraska Territories. This alteration violated the compromise of 1820. Ostensibly, the act provided that settlers in the territories could vote on whether to organize a free to slave state at a later time.
The Anti-Nebraska Party won several major races in 1854, and it merged into the Republican Party in early 1855. |
