Description | Tea party candidates won GOP chairmanships in three states Saturday, underscoring the movement's continued growth into the highest levels of the party.
Radio talk show host and tea partier Kirby Wilbur ousted Washington GOP chair Luke Esser by almost a two-to-one margin, after arguing that Evergreen state Republicans should have fared better in 2010 given the national climate.
In New Hampshire, tea partier Jack Kimball defeated Cheshire County GOP chair Juliana Bergeron for the party's top post in the first in the nation presidential primary state. Kimball promised to mend fences from the divisive battle, but Bergeron would only say she hoped he would stay true to his word.
And in Arizona, tea party favorite Tom Morrissey won the GOP helm on the third ballot in one of the largest turnouts the party has seen for such a vote.
The exception to the rule Saturday was in Oregon. Former gubernatorial candidate Allen Alley was unanimously elected to chair the GOP there, and in his speech to committee members he said he wanted the state party to emulate Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie going forward. |
