Description | Republicans who are not viewed as hardline conservatives — such as two-term Sen. Susan Collins — still are viewed favorably in Maine, even though the state’s recent Democratic trend has eroded its tradition as a “Yankee” bastion. And Collins’ efforts to portray herself as an independent-minded lawmaker put her in a relatively strong position to withstand the challenge she is facing from Democratic Rep. Tom Allen in an election year in which Democrats are strongly contesting a dozen seats held by Republicans.
Yet the polls that consistently show Collins with a solid lead have deterred neither Allen nor his backers at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) — a sign of how strongly the Democrats feel the political winds are at their backs in an election year in which they expect to add big gains on top of the six seats they picked up in the 2006 elections. |
