| Description | Rep. Jim Marshall (D-Ga.), one of the few politically vulnerable Democrats to support the bailout legislation, is up with a television advertisement explaining his vote.
“I don’t like this rescue plan any better than you do. And I’m not interesting in bailing out the irresponsible people who dragged us into this credit mess,” a sober-looking Marshall says in the ad. “But I’m not going to stand by and let this crisis undermine our economy and damage the financial future of everyone in America – their jobs, their savings, their dreams.”
He concludes by saying: “I’m Jim Marshall, and I approve this message because you elected me to do what’s best for America, not what’s easy.”
Marshall’s campaign acknowledges that his support of the legislation could come with political risk. He only won re-election by a two-point margin in 2006, and represents a Macon-area district that is historically Republican. (It gave President Bush 61 percent of the vote in 2004.)
Before the vote, Marshall said “he was willing to give up [his] seat over this.” |
