DescriptionBy Marie Horrigan, CQ Staff
Arizona Republican John Shadegg , the seven-term U.S. House member who on Monday announced his intention to retire, is reconsidering his plans after receiving organized entreaties to do so from Republican colleagues and personal associates.

Among those who have publicly encourage Shadegg to change his mind is Sean Noble — the congressman’s chief of staff — who would have a leg up for the Republican nomination in the Phoenix-area 3rd District should the incumbent stick with his retirement decision.

“I encouraged him not to announce retirement and I am strongly encouraging him to stay,” Noble told CQ Politics on Friday.

“I think he is one of the most dynamic conservative leaders we have in the House,” said Noble of Shadegg, who is in the core group of a coalition of activist House conservatives known as the House Republican Study Committee (RSC).

The 37-year-old Noble added, ”Yeah, I’d like to be a congressman some day, but if he’d stay that would be great. It would be great for the country, it would be great for his district, and I can wait. I’m a young guy.”

Noble’s comments coincided with a petition urging Shadegg not to retire that was circulated by leading members of the RSC, who said late Friday morning that 143 Republican members of Congress had signed the plea.
