Description | "Republican state Sen. Thomas Kean Jr., the son of former two-term Gov. Thomas H. Kean, doesn't mind that he's ruffling a few feathers in Trenton.
The latest office-holding member of a political family that dates back several generations, the 35-year-old Kean said he has taken on the mission of changing the way decisions are made in the State House.
Kean, from Westfield, Union County, has taken on this mission even though he has only been subject to one popular vote - his 2001 Assembly re-election bid. He was initially appointed to the Assembly in March 2001 upon the resignation of the late Alan Augustine. He then was appointed to his Senate seat earlier this year after the resignation of Rich Bagger.
That has not stopped Kean from trying to reform Trenton both as a state assemblyman and as a senator. He has introduced bills that would ban so-called "pay-to-play" - restricting contributions to candidates and political committees from companies doing business with the state - and dual office-holding by state legislators."
