Description | Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole raised more than $1.7 million during the first quarter of 2007, her campaign said Thursday.
More than 9,000 donors contributed to Dole's re-election campaign, and the senior senator from North Carolina hauled in more than $1 million in March alone. Dole had hoped to raise that much during the entire quarter ending March 31.
"To almost double that number is a huge outpouring of support," said Dole adviser Brian Nick, adding that she has more than $1.5 million in cash on hand. Federal financial reports are due April 15.
Some had speculated whether Dole, 70, would seek re-election. She spent the past two years as chairwoman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, leading the party through the November election that saw Democrats take control of the Senate on public opposition to the Iraq war.
Dole ran for the 2000 Republican presidential nomination but dropped her campaign before the primaries. In 1996, her husband, Bob Dole, was the GOP nominee for president.
Nick said Dole is focused on her re-election campaign and will not endorse any presidential candidates until after the GOP elects a nominee.
