Description | One of Washington's leading elections analysts thinks U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole could be overcome by circumstances this fall in her efforts to keep the U.S. Senate in Republican hands.
Dole, a Republican from Salisbury, is chairwoman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, a leadership role that has her traveling across the country this fall in support of GOP candidates.
Dole has come under strong criticism in recent months by some who say she hasn't done enough to recruit strong challengers and raise enough money to match the Democrats' national Senate committee.
But Charlie Cook, publisher of the Cook Political Report in Washington, said recently that Dole is doing the best she can under difficult circumstances.
"I think, for the most part, their problems are completely out of her control," Cook said of the Republican Party.
Cook said Republicans could easily lose incumbent Sens. Conrad Burns of Montana ("He's trying to defeat himself," Cook said); Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania; Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island and Mike DeWine of Ohio.
