Description | Congressman Adam Smith of Tacoma, who is widely considered a good bet to win re-election this fall, has turned into a sugar daddy for more vulnerable Democratic candidates.
Smith is chairman of the political action committee for the centrist New Democrat Coalition. The PAC has raised more than $400,000 since its creation a year ago and is using the money to bolster candidates it likes.
Those include Congressman Rick Larsen of Everett and Darcy Burner, a former Microsoft manager from Carnation. Burner is trying to unseat Republican Dave Reichert in a U.S. House district that stretches from the Seattle suburbs through East Pierce County.
Smith’s Republican opponent in this fall’s election, Steve Cofchin of Tacoma, said he’s raised $30,000. There’s no doubt Cofchin faces a challenge.
“I’ve never heard of Steve Cofchin,” said Seattle independent pollster Stuart Elway, when asked for his take on the race. “Who is he?”
Cofchin does have some bona fides. He was an aide to state Sen. Mike Carrell, a Lakewood Republican, and has been on several community boards in Lakewood and Tacoma. Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna was the headliner at Cofchin’s campaign kickoff. |
