Does Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole expect a 2008 challenge from Democrat John Edwards? Or Gov. Mike Easley?
That's what she suggests in a new fundraising letter.
Barely two years after taking office, the N.C. Republican is raising money for her next campaign.
"I know it's early to begin thinking about my re-election campaign," she wrote would-be supporters this month, "but ... the time to get started is now. Two potential opponents apparently feel that way."
Dole goes on to say that Edwards, who left the Senate in January, "is conducting meetings throughout our state. Edwards is a multimillionaire who put millions of dollars of his personal wealth into his last campaign for the U.S. Senate and defeated a popular incumbent Republican."
Last year, when Edwards was running for president and later vice president, Republicans complained he was never in the state. With his eyes still on the White House, not much has changed. He has traveled to at least 15 states since Jan. 1 and soon plans to visit at least eight more.
Dole, 68, also cites what she calls media reports that Easley, re-elected to a second term as governor in November, may run for the Senate. |
