Description | Senate Republicans on Wednesday narrowly chose North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole to lead their campaign operations for 2006, selecting a familiar face over her energetic younger rival, Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman.
Dole became chairwoman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee after defeating Coleman, 28-27, in a caucus of GOP senators and senators-elect. Dole, 68, led the Red Cross and is married to former Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas. Coleman, 55, defeated former Vice President Walter Mondale in 2002. Both are first term-senators.
They emerged moments apart from the closed-door meeting, and Coleman sought out Dole to give her a congratulatory hug. "You're magnificent," he told her. "I look forward to working with you." |
