Description | Tax crusader's wife launches surprise GOP Senate bid in Florida
The Palm Beach Post
When Jeffrey Saull started blanketing Florida's major media markets last month with TV and radio spots promoting a petition drive to double the state's homestead property-tax exemption, many wondered if the previously low-profile millionaire was also promoting himself for political office. The ads feature children and pets and picket fences, and show Saull doing the things candidates do in commercials -- walking with his wife and nephew, sampling his mom's cooking, listening to people on a porch, leaning against a pickup with a local state representative. "Jeff Saull is now fighting to protect Florida's homeowners," says the narrator in one ad. "Thank you, Jeff," says a man in another.
So it wasn't entirely surprising last week when Saull's publicist said there would be an announcement soon about the launch of a Republican U.S. Senate campaign. But the candidate won't be Jeffrey Saull. Instead, his wife, Karen, plans to enter an already crowded GOP primary field. An even larger Saull media blitz may be in store to introduce the politically unknown Karen Saull to voters. "We're going to spend a fortune on TV. Florida will get to know my wife real well," said Jeffrey Saull, who made millions selling office chairs and candles to big-box retail stores. The Saulls, who have put more than $1 million of their own money already into the petition campaign, will also open their personal checkbooks for "whatever it takes" to finance Karen Saull's Senate bid, Jeffrey Saull vowed. |
