Description |
The President is the executive arm of the country and acts as the commander-in-chief of the Force de defense nationale, or FDN. The president serves a 7-year term with a two-term maximum.
Burundi has had eight Presidents since independence. The ethnicity of its presidents alternated for many years between Hutu and Tutsi until interrupted by large-scale ethnic violence between the two peoples begun in 1994.
As violence ebbed, a plan to re-engineer state institutions on the basis of ethnic power-sharing across political and military positions was devised and implemented in sequences.
