Description This has become a famous seat in recent years. From 1987-2001 its MP was the now twice elected Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone. He sat for Labour until leaving the party in 2000, over the mayoral selection, to become an Independent MP until the 2001 General Election. His successor as Labour MP was Paul Daisley who won with the same percentage majority as Mr Livingstone had enjoyed - 45%. Mr Daisley died of cancer in June 2003, aged 45. At the subsequent by-election on 18 September 2003, the Liberal Democrats scored a surprise win with a swing of 29% to take the seat by 1,118 votes over the Labour candidate, MEP Robert Evans. Sarah Teather went on to become the youngest MP at 29 years old. This is a diverse, densely-populated, inner city constituency stretching north along London's Edgware Road, through Kilburn, Queens Park, Brondesbury Park and parts of Willesden out to Neasden, which is immortalised in the columns of 'Private Eye'. Its name derives from the River Brent which runs through the constituency. Some of the area is rather run-down but there are pockets of gentrification around Queen's Park and Brondesbury. It is socially and ethnically mixed: Kilburn has a large Irish community, some council estates and an array of bedsits. Further north, the considerable Asian population is evidenced by the most spectacular Hindu temple in the UK. There is also a residual Jewish community around Willesden Green. Brent Council has had its troubles in the past, with more than a hint of scandal and corruption in the early 1990s and a number of councillors were investigated. As leader of the council, the former MP Paul Daisley was one of those responsible for getting the borough back on track. Brondesbury Park is the only ward in Brent East to return three Conservative councillors. Mapesbury has one Conservative councillor, but all other wards are solidly Labour.
