Description |
Court consists of five justices, selected from five districts dividing the state, of which one is chosen to serve as chief justice for a four-year term.
Terms for justices last for up to 8 years. Upon a vacancy, the Judicial Qualifications Commission presents three names to the Governor. The Governor chooses one to serve on the court. After appointment, a statewide retention election occurs at the next general election after the justice's third completed year on the court. If successful, the justice serves until another statewide retention election 8 years after this election.
Mandatory retirement at age 70, however a sitting justice may serve until the first Tuesday after the first Monday of January next after an even-numbered year general election.
Terms start on January 1 and end of December 31.
