After a civil war begun in late 2013 that claimed more than 400,000 lives, opposing factions came together on February 21, 2020 to form a transitional government of national unity (TGoNU).
Under the terms of the deal, South Sudan's Council of Ministers would resign en masse to make way for a new team assembled and led by the current President, Salva Kiir (President since July 9, 2011) and his new First Vice President and rebel opponent, Riek Machar.
The Constitution would also be altered to re-form South Sudan into 10 constituent states (from the current 32) and three special administrative areas - Abyei, Reweng and Greater Pibor [Link]
