InfoNorth Little Rock City Attorney & Iraq War Veteran

Major, Arkansas Army National Guard

Paul Suskie is a graduate of Little Rock Catholic High School and was elected Governor of Arkansas’ Boys’ State. After high school, Paul attended the University of Central Arkansas. While at UCA, he was elected both class president and president of his fraternity. After graduation, Paul continued his education at the University of Arkansas and the UALR Schools of Law.

Paul is a major in the Arkansas Army National Guard’s JAG Corp and recently returned in June from a six-month activation for a tour in Afghanistan with Operation Enduring Freedom. While in Afghanistan he was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the United States Central Command’s Combat Patch.

In his professional career, Paul has worked in all three levels of government. He worked in both the Washington and Little Rock offices of U. S. Senator David Pryor and he started his legal career in the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office under Winston Bryant. Paul served as Assistant City Attorney prior to becoming City Attorney in an election that made him the youngest person elected to that position in North Little Rock history.

As City Attorney, Paul created North Little Rock's nuisance abatement team. The S.A.F.E. (Support, Abatement, Fines and Enforcement) team, a first in Arkansas, is a comprehensive criminal nuisance abatement program designed to fight crime by utilizing civil laws to shutdown crack houses, meth-labs, and properties that are havens for criminal activity. Paul is a sought-after speaker on this subject and he has taught the S.A.F.E. team strategy to hundreds of law enforcement officers across Arkansas. Due to these efforts, Paul was presented the 2003 Glenn Zimmerman Municipal Law Award at the Arkansas Municipal League's annual convention. Paul’s work with the S.A.F.E. team was further recognized in North Little Rock’s centennial birthday magazine, published by the Arkansas Times, which highlighted progressive city leaders.

Paul has been a lead litigator in many high profile cases in Arkansas, including successfully representing and arguing on behalf of the state and local government entities in the $33 million Pulaski County use tax lawsuit before the Arkansas Supreme Court. He was also successful in prohibiting individuals from using bankruptcy as a means to avoid paying criminal fines. Paul is currently the President of the Arkansas City Attorney’s Association.

Paul is the Past-President of the North Little Rock Police Athletic League (PAL) and the North Little Rock Lions’ Club. As President of PAL, he worked to implement dozens of programs that have provided over 1,000 at-risk kids the opportunity to participate in academic and athletic activities while under the supervision of police officers. As President of the Lions' Club, Suskie was instrumental in the club's revitalization of Burns Park's Funland providing a family friendly amusement park while saving taxpayer dollars. Due to Paul’s work in the community, the North Little Rock Times named him a North Little Rock “Agent of Change” and the North Little Rock Police Department presented Paul with the North Little Rock Citizen of the Year Award.

Paul is married to the former Erica Lauer of Sherwood and is the proud father of two children – Paul Christopher, Jr. and Lily Grace. Suskie is a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and lives with his family in North Little Rock.
