Info | Michael "Mac" Collins is serving his sixth term in the United States Congress. He is a member of the influential House Ways and Means Committee, serving on the subcommittees for Social Security and Select Revenue Measures; the House permanent Select Committee on Intelligence; and serves as Deputy Majority Whip and Regional Representative to the GOP Steering Committee in the Republican leadership.
A native of Georgia, Mac is a small business-owner who started Collins Trucking Company at the age of 18. He has a distinguished record of public service including the Georgia National Guard from 1964 to 1970, Chairman of the Butts County Commission from 1977 to 1981 and the Georgia State Senate where he was elected to two terms. In 1992, Mac was elected to the United States Congress, defeating a 10-year incumbent.
His business background and conservative philosophy won him a seat on the Ways and Means Committee - the oldest and most active of all House committees. It has legislative jurisdiction over all the tax and revenue measures, management of the public debt, tariff and trade laws, and Social Security and Medicare. In this capacity he has been a tireless crusader for the working people of this nation and has fought to reform our tax codes to make the American workforce more competitive in the global marketplace.
His record of dedication to the security of our nation and support of the armed forces, which so highly rely on accurate intelligence information, earned him an appointment by the Speaker of the House to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. This vital committee has jurisdiction over the nation's intelligence community, including the Central Intelligence Agency; the Defense Intelligence Agency; the National Security Agency; and other intelligence functions within various departments of the federal government.
Mac has consistently worked to reduce government waste and spending and to bring responsibility and accountability to the federal government. During his tenure in Congress, Mac has supported welfare reform, health care reform, the line-item veto, the Senior Citizens Rights-to-Work Act, agriculture reform and telecommunications reform. He also voted for the Taxpayers Relief Act and the Balanced Budget Act. All of these legislative proposals were passed by Congress and signed into law.
Mac is married to the former Julie Watkins of Jackson. They have four children and eleven grandchildren.
