Info | Young Timothy "Tim" Hutchinson
Senator Tim Hutchinson, who brings a unique perspective to Congress as one of few members with a background both in small business and education, was sworn into office in January 1997.
His career in public service began with his election to the Arkansas State House of Representatives, where he served eight years from 1985-1992. In 1992, Hutchinson was elected to represent Arkansas' Third Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served two terms.
During his tenure in Congress, Tim Hutchinson has proven himself to be a dedicated advocate for Arkansans, fighting for a balanced budget, tax relief and reform of our nation's education system. In the House, he was the original author of the $500-per-child tax credit and was one of the main proponents of welfare reform. He also chaired the Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee on Hospitals and Health Care, where he had oversight over the VA's 173 medical centers. In his role on the VA Committee, Senator Hutchinson has worked for several years to open additional outpatient clinics across Arkansas.
As a member of the U.S. Senate, Hutchinson currently serves on the following committees: Armed Services; Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP); Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; Veterans' Affairs; and the Special Committee on Aging. He is Ranking Member of the Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee and the HELP Aging Subcommittee. Senator Hutchinson also founded the Senate's "Biotechnology Caucus" last year.
A member of the Education Working Group, Senator Hutchinson led the charge to pass "Education Savings Accounts" legislation. Parents are now able to place as much as $2,000 per year, per child, in designated savings accounts. These after-tax dollars earn interest at a tax free rate and can be used for education expenses associated with any K-12 school, including tuition, home computers, tutoring, after school programs, and school supplies.
Hutchinson is a former history teacher at John Brown University, located in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. He also co-owned and managed KBCV radio in Bentonville from 1982-1989, learning firsthand the red tape and government bureaucracy which small business owners encounter everyday.
Tim Hutchinson was born in 1949 and raised on a family farm in Gravette, Arkansas. He graduated from Springdale High School and Bob Jones University, and has a Masters Degree in Political Science from the University of Arkansas.
