Info | John Raese is a lifelong resident of West Virginia, growing up in Morgantown, where he still resides today. A product of public schools and West Virginia University, John was both an excellent student and a great athlete, playing varsity baseball and freshman basketball for the Mountaineers while graduating with a degree in physical education.
John has devoted his life to West Virginia business and public service. John is a former chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party, winning that post in 1986. In 1984, John ran against then incumbent Gov. Jay Rockefeller for a seat in the United States Senate, losing by only four percentage points. In a race where Rockefeller outspent John by more than 10 to 1, John was able to reach out to voters across the state and run an incredibly successful campaign. In fact, John’s race against Rockefeller was one of the closest Senate races in the country that year. Not settled with the result, John ran for governor four years later and lost a close race in the Republican primary.
Currently, John is the Chief Executive Officer of Greer Industries and leads several successful family businesses that employ about 1000 people in the steel and limestone businesses, as well as in the media and tourism businesses. Greer Industries holds varied interests that include Greer Steel and Lime Companies as well as the West Virginia Newspaper Publishing Corporation, West Virginia Radio Corporation and Seneca Caverns.
John is married to Liz and is a proud father of Jane, age 12, and Agnes, age 8.
