born in Lillington, Harnett County, N.C., October 5, 1925; attended the Lillington public schools; attended East Carolina College 1942-1944; graduated from University of North Carolina 1945; received a law degree from East Carolina College in 1947; graduated from Wake Forest College School of Law, Winston-Salem, 1950; admitted to the North Carolina bar in 1950 and commenced practice in Lillington; following graduation from law school served four years as clerk of the superior court in Harnett County, N.C.; served in State senate 1955-1957, 1959-1961, 1963-1968, named president pro tempore 1965; served in United States Navy 1944-1946, recalled during Korean Conflict 1952-1955; remained in the Navy Reserve through 1971, lieutenant commander; served in United States Air Force Reserve 1971-1973, lieutenant colonel; attorney general of North Carolina 1969-1974; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1974 and served from January 3, 1975, to January 3, 1981; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1980; resumed the practice of law; is a resident of Buies Creek, N.C.
