D20 School Board Member (El Paso County)
Derrick and his wife, Renee, have raised their family in District 20 since 2004. The last of their three children graduated from The Classical Academy (TCA) this past May. After much prayer, the Wilburns have decided that as new empty nesters the best way to give back to the school district that has blessed their family in so many ways, is to serve on the Academy District 20 School Board.
For years Derrick has actively engaged with the District 20 School Board. Having participated on the District 20 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEI), Derrick was an instrumental voice in ensuring that the national drift of spending an exorbitant amount of money on DEI did not become the district’s reality. Additionally, he has communicated in various forums the need to focus and align District 20’s strategic plan on academic achievement with measurable goals and has taken a strong position against the “woke” ideology infiltrating our schools. Derrick has spoken against the inclusion of Critical Race Theory (CRT) in school curriculum and has vehemently requested sexually explicit books be removed from school libraries. Derrick also advocated fiercely for the selection of a superintendent who was primarily focused on elevating District 20’s academic performance.
When compared to (like) districts in Colorado, District 20’s academic performance consistently places at the top. However, when being at the top means only 60% of all students are rated as proficient in reading (CMAS 2023), we still have work to do. Similarly, 49% of all students are rated as proficient in math (CMAS 2023). The impact of a global pandemic and missing nearly 18 months of in-person learning have left many students behind. Elevating academic performance in partnership with parents is Derrick’s key priority.
