Info | Ashley Daniel Bell was born and raised in Gainesville, GA, the center of State House District 26 where he now seeks elected office. Ashleys father, Bedarius, is a Gainesville native and after serving in Vietnam returned to Gainesville with his now wife of 40 years, Lilla D. Bell. Along with Ashleys oldest brother, Bedarius Jr., they have called Gainesville there home ever since.
Ashley is a graduate of Gainesville High School and is most fondly remembered, before his days in politics, by the people of Gainesville for his active involvement at the Warehouse, where he became a regular in musical theater and part of a family of Thespians that served as a foundation for developing his gift at public speaking.
Ashley was a HOPE Scholarship recipient and graduated in the spring of 2001 from Valdosta State University with a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science. During his matriculation at Valdosta, Ashley became deeply involved in theater once again and in an effort to secure more funding for the Arts he became a candidate and was elected President of the Student Government Association.
Not long after his tenure as Student Body President, Ashley was tapped by United States Congressman Sanford Bishop, a conservative Democrat from Albany, to work in Washington D.C to learn public policy and value-driven decision making up close. After returning to Valdosta from Washington, Ashley continued to work with Congressman Bishop and served as a Field Representative for the Valdosta area.
In 2000, Ashley started upon his journey to lead Americas youth by becoming the youngest delegate elected to attend the 2000 Democratic Party National Convention. This spawned his first of many appearances on CNN as they traveled to Valdosta to meet what CNNs Frank Sesno called one the most impressive students in politics. America watched and Gainesville followed along through the local paper, The Times, as this young man from Gainesville, GA impressed not only the adults but also his peers.
Soon after this journey, young people would rally behind Ashley and his call to action for young people across America to take up a cause greater themselves: The Future of Our Democracy. He was first elected National President of the College Democrats of America during the spring of 2002. During the 2003 College Democrats of America National Convention, Ashley was reelected by over 85% of convention delegates and has traveled America inspiring the next generation of Americas youth. Most recently he decided to join the cause of former Presidential Candidate and North Carolina Senator John Edwards, who shares a similar background; being from a working class family in the south and having made his way to success through faith, hard work, and love of good parents.
Senator Edwards summed up Ashleys ability to serve you in an interview he conducted with Ashley in September:
Hes one of the rising stars in our nationHe has a wisdom and understanding of the issues that not just young Americans but all Americans care aboutHe believes as I do that America works best when it works for all Americans
