Info | HENSLEY, Kirby J(ames) - Baptist minister who believed in reincarnation and the ability to interract with life on other planets.
Born 7/23/1911 in Burnsville NC; parents were John & Delilah M. (McPeters) Hensley.
Attended public schools up to the third grade in NC; thought by some to have been illiterate.
Served as a Baptist minister in North Carolina; left that denomination and first became a Pentecostal. Met first wife Nora at a Pentecostal service; had two daughters with her. Served as Pentecostal minister in Oklahoma and California.
After his divorce he returned to North Carolina, where he met and married Lila (Gouge) though his first wife was still alive. During their 46 year marriage they had 1 daughter and 2 sons.
Relocated to California, where he started the Universal Life Church in 1962. This organization adopted a series of religious beliefs containing a mixture of Christian ideas as well as ideas from Asian religions. The organization named Hensley its "President" in 1962, and he held the post until his death in 1999. Hensley founded a law school among the membership of his organization.
In 1963, Hensley founded a political party named the Universal Party. The organization had a loose connection with the "Outer Space Party" of 1960. The party nominated Hensley for US President in 1964 and 1968.
Hensley left the Universal Party in 1970 and founded a new party named the People's Peace and Prosperity Party to shed some of the intergalactic emphasis of his organization. Candidate for Governor of California on this ticket in 1970 but failed to gain ballot access.
Hensley died 3/19/1999.
